Odds are that if you are reading this blog, you already know why eating in season is important. There are plenty of articles about how healthy eating seasonably is for you and the environment, as well as how it can even be cheaper if done right. Plus it’s better for the local economy as eating seasonally often goes hand in hand with eating locally!
However, eating in season is a privilege, and it’s not enough for you to simply opt out of the problems with our food system by “voting with your dollar” and only purchasing local and in season produce. We need to actively work to change the food system for all. Start by listening to the people who are already doing the work, listening to find ways you can help, whether that’s by finding ways to create better food systems for schools, or petitioning for your local farmers market to accept SNAP benefits. If you are lucky enough to have the financial privilege to opt out of the food system, also make sure that you are working to fix the system for others.
As long as we are working to change the food system, then make sure to eat seasonally if only because fresh produce does taste better when it is in season, and even better yet when it comes straight from the garden! So we’ve got a couple of resources to let you find what is in season, as well as some local resources for getting seasonal produce.
Luckily, chard is in season and if you look at last week’s post about kale stems you can easily treat chard stems the same way! What is your favorite produce in season right now?
